Governance Structure Development

The Need

The organizational structure of a group medical practice is usually the result of an evolutionary process begun when the group was much smaller and faced less complex situations. Because each physician is an owner of the practice, he or she often wants to be involved in each and every decision affecting the group. Unfortunately:

bulletPhysicians have limited experience in how to reach decisions in a group environment.
bulletThey are often unwilling to define responsibility and provide authority so that decisions can be made by individuals or subsets of the entire group.
bulletEach physician tries to direct the activities of the medical group manager, and the manager has no common set of goals to guide his or her direction.

The above can result in:

bulletLack of progress by the group towards reaching its goals.
bulletFrustration by the physicians because of lack of progress.
bulletDissatisfaction of the manager because of conflicting goals.

Our Services

Latham Consulting Group can assist you in solving these issues by helping you to:

bulletDevelop a defined organization structure.
bulletSpecifically identify responsibilities and authority.
bulletCreate a formalized governance and decision-making process.
bulletDevelop job descriptions and a performance review system for administrative staff.

Physician Conflict Management/Resolution

The Need

No medical group is so talented, no practice so unified, no clinic so successful that it is immune to internal conflict. Misunderstandings arise. Personalities clash. Petty irritations mount. If no one stands up to the natural course of human emotions, bitter infighting and backstabbing can erupt. Physicians battle openly for turf or refuse to communicate at all. In the worst cases, mutual distrust ultimately has a detrimental effect on patient care or can even threaten the survival of the medical group. Less dramatic but no less destructive are the issues that stay underground, manifested only in poor teamwork, stress and tension.

Our Services

Latham Consulting Group's Physician Conflict Management/Resolution Services can help your group create a partnership that builds an effective team. Such a team acknowledges conflict sooner than later, works out conflict straightforwardly and constructively, and uses conflict as an opportunity for change and growth.

Latham Consulting Group's systematic approach:

bulletCreates an atmosphere that will allow the physicians effectively to resolve conflict.
bulletIdentifies and eliminates "dysfunctional" rules that increase conflict and reduce effectiveness.
bulletDevelops a variety of options for resolving the conflict.
bulletCreates an action plan that clearly defines "doable" actions.

Our conflict management/resolution process typically involves individual interviews with all or selected physicians and members of the management team. Additional data gathering (through the use of surveys and other data gathering tools) may be required to gain a comprehensive understanding of how internal and external factors contribute to the conflict. This effort is then followed by meetings or retreats designed to help the group resolve the conflict.

Groups engage us when the volatility of the situation is so sensitive that a third party facilitator is needed. Some conflicts involve issues, emotions, personalities and past histories which create such a high level of tension that it becomes extremely difficult for the group to resolve the situation internally. Latham Consulting Group provides an effective, systematic approach to conflict resolution.
